Sr. Specialist - A&H Underwriting

Job Purpose
The Senior Specialist, A&H Underwriting is responsible for assessing medical risks and making accurate underwriting decisions for individual insurance applications within agreed service standards and turnaround times. The role works closely with sales channels, reinsurers, and internal stakeholders to ensure sound risk assessment, consistent underwriting practices, and a positive customer experience.
Key Responsibilities
1. Medical Underwriting & Risk Assessment
- Evaluate medical and non-medical insurance applications and determine appropriate underwriting decisions in accordance with company guidelines and risk appetite.
- Assess complex cases by reviewing medical reports, financial information, and other supporting documents.
- Ensure accurate and timely underwriting decisions while meeting agreed Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and turnaround time targets.
- Prepare case summaries and recommendations for referral cases and reinsurance submissions.
- Liaise with reinsurers on jumbo or complex cases, including preparation of supporting documentation and underwriting rationale.
- Maintain consistency and quality in underwriting decisions through adherence to underwriting standards and regulatory requirements.
2. Underwriting Advisory & Technical Support
- Provide underwriting consultation and technical guidance to sales channels, Policy Management, Claims, and other internal stakeholders.
- Support the interpretation and application of underwriting guidelines across the business.
- Share knowledge and best practices with team members to enhance underwriting quality and consistency.
- Participate in underwriting case discussions and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
3. Customer & Sales Channel Support
- Respond to underwriting-related enquiries from customers, agents, brokers, and internal stakeholders through various communication channels.
- Clearly explain underwriting requirements, decisions, and policy terms when required.
- Support customer experience initiatives and contribute to service excellence objectives.
- Build positive relationships with sales channels while maintaining underwriting discipline and risk standards.
4. Process Improvement & Quality Assurance
- Monitor underwriting activities to ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
- Identify opportunities to improve underwriting processes, efficiency, and customer experience.
- Support system enhancements, workflow improvements, and underwriting projects when assigned.
- Maintain accurate documentation and records within underwriting systems.
Must Have
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Medical Technology, Health Sciences, Insurance or a related field.
- 2-5 years of experience in Medical Underwriting, Policy Management, or a related insurance function.
- Professional insurance qualifications (e.g., CII, ACII, LOMA) are an advantage.
- Experience in Health or Accident & Health insurance underwriting is preferred.
Nice to Have
- Exposure to reinsurance case management or complex medical case assessment would be beneficial.
- Strong understanding of life and health insurance underwriting principles.
- Ability to interpret medical information and assess underwriting risks.
- Knowledge of underwriting guidelines, policy provisions, and insurance operations.
- Understanding of reinsurance concepts and referral processes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Experience using underwriting or insurance administration systems.
- Any AI-future skills e.g., ChatGPT, or CoPilot365, will be advantage.
