The Opportunity

Reporting to the Payroll Manager, the Senior Payroll Officer plays a pivotal role in delivering accurate, compliant, and insight-driven payroll services across Australia and New Zealand.

This role goes beyond traditional processing—combining operational excellence with continuous improvement, systems optimisation, and data-informed decision-making to enhance payroll performance and employee experience.


Key Responsibilities

Payroll Delivery & Compliance

  • Manage end-to-end fortnightly payroll with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and timeliness
  • Maintain high-quality employee data, ensuring integrity across all payroll inputs
  • Interpret and apply Australian enterprise agreements, modern awards, and legislation, ensuring compliant and equitable pay outcomes
  • Analyse and resolve complex payroll queries related to enterprise agreements, including pay conditions, allowances, penalties, and entitlements
  • Process and reconcile PAYG, superannuation, and payroll tax obligations
  • Manage STP reporting and year-end processes with precision
  • Ensure adherence to governance, audit, and internal control frameworks

Systems & Process Optimisation

  • Act as SME for payroll systems (iChris) and Employee Self-Service platforms
  • Drive system enhancements and automation opportunities to improve efficiency and user experience
  • Conduct data audits and implement controls to support data accuracy and reliability
  • Develop and refine SOPs, embedding best practice and scalable processes
  • Support system upgrades, testing cycles, and digital optimisation initiatives

Reporting & Insights

  • Deliver regular and ad hoc payroll reporting using data to generate actionable insights
  • Support financial reporting cycles including month-end and year-end
  • Analyse payroll data to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities
  • Contribute to reporting requirements for Finance and Head Office

Advisory & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Provide clear, practical payroll advice to employees and managers, including guidance on enterprise agreements and pay conditions
  • Partner with HR to ensure seamless alignment across the employee lifecycle
  • Support initiatives that enhance self-service capability and reduce manual dependency
  • Build trusted relationships through responsive, solutions-focused communication

Governance & Risk

  • Strengthen payroll controls and ensure consistent application
  • Support audit processes through accurate documentation and insights
  • Monitor compliance with evolving Australian employment legislation
  • Identify risks proactively and implement corrective actions

About You

  • Proven experience in a senior payroll role with end-to-end responsibility
  • Strong expertise in iChris, with the ability to optimise systems and workflows
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying Australian enterprise agreements and awards, and resolving related payroll queries
  • Advanced numerical and analytical capability, with a data-driven mindset
  • Experience improving processes, leveraging automation, and enhancing efficiency
  • High level of professionalism, resilience, and attention to detail
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to work autonomously while contributing to a collaborative team environment
  • Adaptable and solutions-focused, with a continuous improvement mindset
