Technical Underwriter - Workers' Accidents (MidCorp)
Brussels, BE, 1000
About the Role
Our Benelux Steering department is looking for a Technical Underwriter specializing in Workers' Accidents (WAC) to drive analytical depth and underwriting rigour across our SME and MidCorp portfolio in Belgium. This is a technically focused role centred on risk analysis, portfolio performance, and pricing excellence — not a commercial or broker-facing position.
You will own the technical health of our Workers' Accidents book: analysing loss patterns, refining pricing models, stress-testing underwriting assumptions, and ensuring our risk selection stays sharp. If you're energized by occupational risk data, frequency/severity trends, and translating actuarial insight into underwriting action — this role is built for you.
What You'll Do
- Portfolio Analysis & Performance Monitoring — Track and control portfolio results against financial targets (combined ratio, operating profit, forward-looking KPIs). Identify adverse trends early, quantify drivers of loss, and recommend corrective underwriting actions.
- Technical Risk Assessment — Evaluate complex and exceptional WAC risks that exceed standard underwriting authority (SME and MidCorp). Assess occupational exposures, industry hazard profiles, and accumulation risk.
- Underwriting Strategy & Guidelines — Develop and refine underwriting guidelines for Workers' Accidents. Translate macroeconomic shifts (inflation, wage indexation, regulatory changes) into updated risk parameters and appetite definitions.
- Pricing & Product Development — Ensure technical pricing adequacy across the WAC portfolio. Collaborate with actuarial and product teams to align rates with current claims experience and exposure trends.
- Underwriting File Reviews — Conduct structured reviews to assess underwriting quality, compliance with Allianz Rules for Technical Management (P&C), and adherence to group standards (ASU).
- Data Analysis & Reporting — Build and maintain dashboards that provide clear visibility into portfolio health, segment profitability, and underwriting discipline. Turn data into decisions.
- Reinsurance Collaboration — Identify facultative reinsurance needs for exceptional risks in partnership with the Reinsurance Department.
What We Offer
- A full-time role based in Brussels within an international environment
- A technically deep position at Allianz, a global leader in insurance
- Access to the Allianz P&C Academy and continuous technical development programs
- A collaborative team of steering managers across Property, Engineering, Liability, and Marine
- Competitive salary package with fringe benefits
What We're Looking For
- Education: Master's degree in economics, business, actuarial science, or a related quantitative field
- Experience: Proven track record in Workers' Accidents underwriting, technical portfolio analysis, or occupational risk assessment — ideally within SME/MidCorp commercial segments
- Technical Skills: Strong analytical mindset; comfortable with data modelling, Excel, dashboards, and AI-supported tools. You think in loss ratios, not in sales targets.
- Regulatory Awareness: Understanding of Belgian WAC legislation and market dynamics is a strong advantage
- Mindset: You dig into the numbers, challenge assumptions, and hold the line on technical discipline. You want depth, not breadth.
- Languages: Fluent in English. Dutch and/or French is a plus.
- Compliance: Familiarity with group underwriting standards (ASU or equivalent) is an advantage.
Why This Role Stands Out
Workers' Accidents is one of the most technically demanding lines in Belgian P&C — driven by regulation, wage dynamics, and occupational risk complexity. This role puts you at the centre of that technical challenge without the distraction of commercial negotiations. You'll shape how we assess, price, and manage WAC risk across our entire MidCorp book.
