As Sr. Corporate Underwriter you will manage the day-to-day operation of the Underwriting function. Provide guidance on the complex Underwriting situations, ensuring the risk accepted is appropriate and in line with the organizational goals and strategy. Create, manage, refine and maintain Underwriting controls. Coordinate work activities to achieve the volume expected to meet operational requirements. Recognize and recommend operational improvements. Responsible for the day-to-day application of organizational policies and procedures from a local, regional and global level.

 

This is a corporate underwriting role focused on owning underwriting decisions, pricing logic, and portfolio profitability. It is not an operational, broker, or intermediary underwriting position.

 

 

Way of working: This position follows a hybrid work schedule to include to in-office days (Tuesdays and Thursday) at our office in Cambridge, Ontario

 

What you will do

 

  • Build and lead a high‑performing underwriting culture; attract, retain, and engage associates while effectively communicating across all levels.
  • Develop, evaluate, and apply underwriting pricing logic, including understanding and applying key non‑actuarial pricing inputs such as loss experience, expense assumptions, margin targets, risk loadings, and market conditions. Support new business launches, renewals, pricing implementation, and RFP activities.
  • Analyze underwriting data to assess portfolio and product‑level profitability, including loss ratios, expense ratios, and contribution to P&L; make and defend underwriting decisions based on financial impact.
  • Prepare and deliver standardized and ad‑hoc reports in line with regional, global, and reinsurance requirements; monitor KPIs and metrics.
  • Maintain and apply underwriting guidelines, manuals, and the four‑eye review principle in alignment with company strategy.
  • Exercise independent underwriting authority within delegated limits, making pricing and risk decisions. Collaborate with lines of business to support pricing decisions, product development, and consensus-building.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders; respond to underwriting inquiries and projects.
  • Identify, recommend, and support process and workflow improvements to enhance efficiency and service standards.
  • Work effectively in an environment shaped by artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, data analytics, and cloud‑based tools, using insights responsibly and in alignment with our standards for data governance, security, and ethical use.

 

 

 

What you will bring 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Mathematics or related field or equivalent combination of work and education experience.
  • 7+ years of underwriting experience within an insurance carrier (insurer-side), with direct accountability for risk selection, pricing decisions, and portfolio profitability.
    Experience primarily limited to broker, MGA, or intermediary roles where pricing and underwriting authority resided with partner insurers will not meet the requirements of this role.
  • Experience in travel insurance or healthcare industry preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of insurance pricing fundamentals (non‑actuarial), including how rates are constructed and adjusted to achieve profitability and risk appetite objectives.A Chartered Insurance Professional Designation (CIP), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) is preferred.
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to use financial reports to determine impact of decision and risk management/evaluation.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment or initiative and function with minimal supervision.

 

 

What we offer

 

Annualized base pay range is $76,860 - $105,000. CAD

 

Actual base pay may vary based upon factors such as relevant experience, qualifications, internal equity of peers, and geographic location. Employees may also qualify for performance-based bonuses, merit increases, and other incentives based on individual and company performance. The availability and amount of these additional compensation elements are determined by company policy and may vary.
