The Senior Underwriter performs day‑to‑day underwriting activities, applying advanced underwriting expertise and providing guidance on complex underwriting situations to ensure risks accepted align with organizational strategy and risk appetite. The role creates, maintains, and refines underwriting controls; supports coordination of underwriting activities to meet operational volume requirements; and identifies and recommends process improvements. The Senior Underwriter ensures consistent application of underwriting policies and procedures at local, regional, and global levels.

 

 

Way of working: This position follows a hybrid work schedule to include two in-office days (Tuesdays and Thursdays) at our office in Cambridge, Ontario

 

 

What you will do

 

  • Build and lead a high‑performing underwriting culture; attract, retain, and engage associates while effectively communicating across all levels.
  • Support new business launches, renewals, pricing implementation, and RFP activities.
  • Analyze underwriting data to assess risk acceptability, profitability, and pricing; provide clear recommendations and rationale.
  • Prepare and deliver standardized and ad‑hoc reports in line with regional, global, and reinsurance requirements; monitor KPIs and metrics.
  • Maintain and apply underwriting guidelines, manuals, and the four‑eye review principle in alignment with company strategy.
  • Collaborate with lines of business to support pricing decisions, product development, and consensus-building.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders; respond to underwriting inquiries and projects.
  • Identify, recommend, and support process and workflow improvements to enhance efficiency and service standards.
  • Work effectively in an environment shaped by artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, data analytics, and cloud‑based tools, using insights responsibly and in alignment with our standards for data governance, security, and ethical use.

 

 

 

What you will bring 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Mathematics or related field OR equivalent combination of work and education experience.
  • 7+ years underwriting experience in affinity, short-tail, accident and health, or property and casualty insurance OR 7 years equivalent experience in roles with significant exposure to risk assessment; financial, data and statistical analysis, and decision-making in insurance or related fields.
  • Experience in travel insurance or healthcare industry preferred.
  • A Chartered Insurance Professional Designation (CIP), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) is preferred.
  • Proficient with MS Office365 to include proficiency with Excel
  • Power BI experience would be a plus
  • Attention to detail with ability to multi-task and adapt to unique governance environment.
  • Ability to use financial reports to determine impact of decision and risk management/evaluation.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment or initiative and function with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent English language skills verbal and written with ability to effectively communicate and influence

 

 

What we offer

 

Annualized base pay range is $76,860 - $105,000 CAD

 

Actual base pay may vary based upon factors such as relevant experience, qualifications, internal equity of peers, and geographic location. Employees may also qualify for performance-based bonuses, merit increases, and other incentives based on individual and company performance. The availability and amount of these additional compensation elements are determined by company policy and may vary.
