Summary:
As a Credit Underwriter, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality credit risk decisions and proactive portfolio management to support profitable and sustainable business growth. Combining credit underwriting authority with buyer and portfolio credit analysis, you will ensure timely, well-reasoned credit limit decisions while continuously monitoring credit risk exposure. Acting as a trusted credit partner to internal stakeholders, customers, and brokers, you will balance credit risk discipline with commercial awareness, contributing to customer satisfaction, retention, and portfolio profitability across domestic and export business lines.
Main Tasks:
- Assess and decide on credit limit requests within delegated authority, adhering to internal underwriting guidelines, ratings, and response time standards.
- Conduct in-depth financial and credit analysis of buyers, SMEs, and large corporates using internal systems, financial statements, market intelligence, and direct buyer contact.
- Proactively manage and monitor a dedicated portfolio of buyers and customers, identifying early warning signals and emerging risks.
- Maintain regular contact with buyers, customers, and brokers through calls, meetings, and visits (where applicable), including preparation of visit and risk reports.
- Prepare sector, economic, and portfolio reviews to support underwriting decisions and strategic risk steering, including decisive action on deteriorating buyers.
- Contribute to loss ratio management by proposing and implementing corrective actions in collaboration with Commercial and other internal stakeholders.
- Support internal projects, initiatives, and process improvements related to risk business models, information quality, and portfolio steering.
- Work closely with Credit Analysts, Claims, Commercial teams, and international colleagues to ensure consistent risk decisions and knowledge sharing.
What we are looking for:
- Minimum 2–5 years’ experience in credit underwriting, credit analysis, banking, insurance, or a rating/financial institution.
- Strong financial analysis and company assessment skills, including balance sheet, cash flow, and profitability analysis.
- Solid understanding of credit risk, trade credit insurance, and buyer risk assessment methodologies.
- Knowledge of the Irish and broader European economic environment; sector expertise is an advantage.
- Proven ability to communicate and justify risk decisions clearly to internal and external stakeholders, including senior counterparts.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build long-term, professional relationships, even in challenging discussions.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and internal risk/credit systems.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
