Foundation Scrum Master

 

 

Role Description

 

The purpose of the Foundation Scrum Master (FSM) role is to act as a servant leader to one Scrum team, normally within a wider scaled agile model. The FSM will use agile values, principles and practices to help the team to reach expected outcomes and continuously improve. The FSM role is often the first step in an agile professional’s journey and therefore the role works collaboratively with other change professionals. To support their development, the FSM will receive coaching from other Agile professionals. 

 

This will be a hybrid role based in either our Guildford or London office, with occasional travel to meet clients expected.

 

Salary Information

 

Pay: Circa £45,000 per year.

 

Pay is based on relevant experience, skills for the role, and location. Salary is only one part of our total reward package.

 

About You

 

  • Increase knowledge of and use agile methods and frameworks (e.g. Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) to support your Agile team and create a high energy, motivating environment to deliver their prioritised outcomes  
  • Ensure Agile events happen on agreed cadence, meet their designed purpose, are well planned, timeboxed and effective.  
  • Coach the Agile team to continuously demonstrate Agile values, align to principles and practices and improve their maturity, reaching out to other Scrum Masters for regular support to enhance your coaching ability. Help them understand the importance of metrics and ensure they capture and update core agile metrics (e.g. velocity, burndown) regularly. This will support with identifying issues and potential improvements.   
  • Seek to identify quickly and collaborate with others to remove the blockers and impediments that may affect the Agile teams’ progress and distract them from delivering their committed outcomes. 
  • Work collaboratively with the Product Owner assigned to the Agile team to ensure they are maintaining the backlog through refinement and visualising it effectively for the team and wider organisation 
  • Communicate effectively and be transparent with key stakeholders to support them in understanding the progress and challenges experienced by the team and help protect teams from uncontrolled expansion of work 
  • Encourage cross functional working and reduce silos by building strong relationships with other Scrum Masters to look for opportunities to identify dependencies, share best practices and identify support that can be shared across Agile teams and foster a trusting and safe environment where problems can be raised without fear of blame, retribution or being judged, emphasising problem-solving and continuous improvement.  

 

Essential Skills

 

  • Passion for and self-learned knowledge of Agile (Scrum, Kanban and SAFe)  
  • Experience within product, project or change delivery, preferably Agile 
  • May be new to team management but will have good experience and visibility of working within small teams across multiple locations and be competent in communicating with the team and day to day support 
  • Experience of resource management – requesting, evaluating and dealing with resource disruption on a small scale (up to 10 resources from one or two suppliers)  
  • Experience of financial and budget management for small change initiatives 
  • Experience within Financial Services, preferable Insurance.
  • Passion for and working knowledge of Agile values, principles and practices  
  • Basic experience or knowledge of Agile tooling such as Jira and Confluence 
  • Strong relationship and trust building skills   
  • Ability to communicate effectively with teams and stakeholders. 
  • Highly organised with an eye for detail 
  • A self-starter with a thirst for knowledge and commitment to growth of themselves and others
