Role Description

A new opportunity has just become available and we’re looking for a Senior Underwriter to join our team. This role is based from our London office on a hybrid basis.

Salary Information

 

Pay:  Circa £80,000 per annum

 

Pay is based on relevant experience, skills for the role, and location. Salary is only one part of our total reward package.

 

About You

 

  • Adheres to Underwriting Authority, referring cases where appropriate and an excellent awareness of the impact case and portfolio decisions have on Profit and Loss and the achievement of plan.
  • Delivers KPI targets across complex cases/portfolios worked upon to deliver the high level line of business strategies.
  • Provides expert technical knowledge and insight to policy wordings ensuring these important customer documents are maintained. Completes as appropriate for each line of business.
  • Provides training, support and guidance to underwriters, taking responsibility for their technical development. Inputs in to the development of new and refreshed training materials.
  • Ensures up-to-date knowledge and understanding of all relevant compliance and regulatory rules and procedures.
  • Handles internal and external customer queries, dealing with them in an efficient, practical and professional manner both verbally and in writing and represents the Company’s Technical area at appropriate internal and external forums.
  • Liaises with all other appropriate internal parties including Sales and Distribution, Pricing, Claims and Operations.

 

Essential Skills

 

  • An in-depth understanding of the make-up of policy wordings/clauses with an understanding of non-standard covers available and their implications.
  • Aware of different market approaches and competitors and how they impact on New Business and Existing Business retention.
  • Able to identify cover and hazards influencing the acceptance, pricing or terms applicable to a risk and applies risk management techniques and appropriate underwriting rules to ensure sufficient breadth of risks are available to the Company.
  • Understands internal and external provider processes and how this may impact on product delivery and performance.
  • Excellent understanding of how schemes within the line of business are constructed including Delegated Authority rules.
  • Understanding of the skills and tools required for effective Underwriting and has the ability to use these key skills to underwrite risks profitably.
  • Understands causes and costs of claims and can apply risk management tools to mitigate loss.
  • Knowledge of Broker Wordings as well as Co-Insurance and Co-Reinsurance placement of business.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with broker markets and clients.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation and its application by Line of Business.
  • Full working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • High level Underwriting authority in Line of Business achieved..
  • Experience of working within a general insurer environment with proven experience in a real estate team and a personal responsibility for portfolio or case management and appropriate evidence of managing the appropriate performance KPIs.
  • Proven experience of being able to work within a high performing team and providing the drive for continuous improvement in performance.
  • Proven ability to understand key underwriting concepts and principles.
  • A good knowledge of the key elements of regulation and legislation that exist within the general insurance market place.
  • Educated to degree level or with equivalent relevant experience
  • Relevant Level 2/3 Underwriting Academy modules completed or working towards (where appropriate).
  • Financial Principles and Pricing Techniques completed or working towards.
  • Achieved or progression towards ACII qualification where appropriate.
