An exciting opportunity exists to join our Sydney-based SME Underwriting team in a 12-month temporary contract, covering a parental leave period. We're open to considering candidates at either SME Underwriter or Senior SME Underwriter level, with the successful applicant's appointment level determined based on their skills, experience and demonstrated capability. In this role, you'll work closely with brokers, underwriting colleagues, leadership and key stakeholders to deliver outstanding underwriting outcomes, support profitable growth and contribute to a high-performing team culture.

About the role
- Manage electronic referrals, new business, renewals, endorsements and policy updates, ensuring each interaction is handled with care, precision and responsiveness.
- Assess and underwrite risks within delegated authority, providing balanced recommendations and confident escalations that support sustainable, profitable growth.
- Partner closely with the underwriting team, leadership and the wider business to deliver work aligned with agreed service standards and shared goals.
- Cultivate strong, trusted relationships with brokers and key internal stakeholders across SME and Commercial portfolios, fostering meaningful collaboration and partnership.
- Monitor portfolio performance with a proactive, detail-focused approach to support GWP, leakage control, profitability and strong account retention.
- Keep abreast of market conditions and industry trends, identifying opportunities to drive profitable growth and deliver positive customer outcomes.
- Champion continuous improvement by sharing ideas, supporting compliance and contract certainty, and contributing to enhancements in underwriting practices.
- For candidates appointed at the Senior Underwriter level, provide underwriting guidance and technical leadership, support capability development across the team, act as an escalation point for complex referrals, and build strong market relationships through broker engagement activities, including meetings, presentations, networking opportunities and relationship management initiatives that strengthen Allianz's presence and partnership within the market.
About you
- Demonstrated underwriting experience within a general insurance environment, preferably across SME Packages and Commercial Motor.
- Ability to build and nurture strong relationships, confidently influencing and collaborating across teams and stakeholder levels.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to balance priorities and manage competing demands while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of communicating with clarity, impact and influence.
- Proven analytical and critical thinking capability to assess risk, interpret information and make sound underwriting decisions.
- A genuine passion for delivering thoughtful, responsive service that supports both internal and external partners.
- Ability to work with confidence and self-direction while contributing positively to team outcomes.
- Comprehensive understanding of relevant regulatory and compliance requirements impacting underwriting activities.
- A passion for leveraging emerging technologies to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
- For Senior Underwriter applicants, demonstrated experience providing technical guidance, coaching or mentoring and managing more complex underwriting referrals will be highly regarded.
