About the role
- Provide pragmatic, commercial legal advice within agreed timeframes and scope relating to: (1) the development, distribution, and marketing of AAL’s products and (2) AAL’s personal injury business
- Provide legal review and sign off on public facing documents in accordance with AAL’s Public Document Due Diligence Process (PDDD) to key clients within agreed timelines and scope.
- Assess and communicate legal risk and guide decision making for optimal solutions aligned to commercial context and risk assessment.
- Advise on, review, negotiate and draft changes to contracts used by, or provided to, the personal injury businesses and draft new contracts as required.
- Monitor and, where appropriate, seek to influence changes in law which may affect AAL, and assist in preparing the business for the impact of those changes.
- Provide legal insights and solution-based advice on key and emerging issues impacting the AAL’s businesses to minimise risk.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of key industry trends and regulatory developments across AAL, working with functional peers to identify strategic implications for AAL’s businesses and actively supporting a coordinated organisational response to those developments.
- Collaborate with functional peers to initiate and deploy opportunities for continual improvement in corporate legal, compliance and culture.
About you
- Bachelor of Laws or equivalent certification and current legal practicing certificate.
- Admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor of a State or Territory Supreme court in Australia.
- Minimum of 7 years post qualification experience.
- Relevant legal experience in a position in-house or in a large national or global law firm.
- Technical expertise in the following areas of law: workers compensation, CTP, privacy, financial services and regulatory law - particularly as relevant to CTP, Workers Compensation and NDIS.
- Knowledge of insurance, contract, corporate laws.
- Understanding of relevant regulatory and/or legislative compliance requirements that impact the organisation - particularly with reference to the personal injuries’ businesses.
- Strong commercial focus enabling all legal advice to be framed and considered in its commercial context.
- Ability to identify, analyse and assess risks inherent to the business and put in place appropriate controls / actions to manage the risks for future sustainability.
- Demonstrated ability to partner and collaborate effectively with senior stakeholders to establish strong professional relationships and influence outcomes.
- Ability to manage key/complex negotiations to facilitate favourable commercial and financial conditions for AAL, whilst ensuring mutual agreement between parties is achieved.
