Technical Underwriter - MidCorp Property
Brussels, BE, 1000
About the Role
Our Benelux Steering department is looking for a Technical Underwriter specializing in Property to strengthen the analytical backbone of our MidCorp portfolio. This is a deeply technical role focused on risk assessment, portfolio performance analysis, and underwriting excellence — not a commercial or broker-facing position.
You will be the go-to expert for property risk evaluation, pricing adequacy, and data-driven portfolio steering across our Low, Mid, and Upper MidCorp segments (including coinsurance). If you thrive on diving into loss data, challenging assumptions, and translating technical insights into underwriting action — this is your role.
What You'll Do
- Portfolio Analysis & Steering — Monitor and control portfolio performance against financial targets (loss ratio, combined ratio, forward-looking KPIs). Identify trends, flag deterioration early, and recommend corrective actions.
- Technical Risk Assessment — Evaluate complex and exceptional property risks that fall outside standard underwriting authority. Assess exposures, accumulations, and facultative reinsurance needs.
- Underwriting Strategy & Guidelines — Develop and refine underwriting guidelines for the Property line of business. Translate market developments (e.g., inflation, climate risk, construction trends) into actionable underwriting parameters.
- Pricing & Product Development — Drive technical pricing adequacy across the property portfolio. Collaborate with actuarial and product teams to ensure rates reflect current risk reality.
- Underwriting File Reviews — Conduct structured file reviews to ensure underwriting quality, compliance with Allianz Rules for Technical Management (P&C), and adherence to risk appetite.
- Data & Reporting — Build and maintain dashboards and analyses that give leadership clear visibility into portfolio health and underwriting discipline.
What We Offer
- A full-time role based in Brussels within an international environment
- A technically deep position at Allianz, a global leader in insurance
- Access to the Allianz P&C Academy and continuous technical development programs
- A collaborative team of steering managers across Engineering, Liability, Marine, and Workers' Accidents
- Competitive salary package with benefits (company-car)
What We're Looking For
- Education: Master's degree in economics, business, actuarial science, or a related field
- Experience: Proven track record in property underwriting, technical portfolio analysis, or risk engineering — ideally within commercial/MidCorp segments
- Technical Skills: Strong analytical capabilities; comfortable working with data, Excel, dashboards, and ideally AI-supported tools
- Mindset: You challenge the numbers, question assumptions, and drive technical rigour. You're not looking for a sales role — you want to go deep on risk.
- Languages: Fluent in English. Dutch and/or French is a plus.
- Compliance Awareness: Familiarity with group underwriting standards (ASU or equivalent frameworks) is an advantage.
Why This Role Stands Out
This isn't a generalist portfolio manager position. It's a specialist technical underwriting role where your analytical depth directly shapes how we price, select, and manage property risk across Benelux. You'll work at the intersection of data, risk, and strategy — without the noise of commercial negotiations.
