Your ambitions. Your dreams. Your tomorrow
At Allianz Commercial (AzC), we are the global leader for insuring corporate and specialty risks in the Allianz Group. Whether it’s aircraft, international business or offshore wind parks, Allianz Commercial has an extensive range of risks covered when it comes to protecting businesses.
We are looking for an Senior Underwriting Governance Specialist based in Chicago
Your Team
The Underwriting Integrity and Solutions builds and maintains the underwriting governance frameworks across the P&C Commercial and Specialty business across large- and middle-corporate business segments.
The Impact You Will Have
We are looking for a Senior Underwriting Governance Specialist to join the Chief Underwriting Office (CUO) Underwriting Integrity & Solutions (UWIS) Team. In this high-impact individual contributor role, you will help build and sustain a disciplined underwriting governance framework across our P&C, Commercial and Specialty portfolios, with a specific focus on large- and middle- corporate business segments. You will shape policy, drive data-informed insights, and champion best practices across a complex, matrixed organization — directly supporting CUO objectives and enabling underwriters to operate within Allianz Commercial's risk appetite.
Some of your specific responsibilities could include:
-
Develop, maintain, and continuously improve UWIS-owned underwriting governance frameworks with the primary goal of maximizing underwriting adherence to Allianz Commercial's risk appetite and supporting CUO strategic objectives.
-
Design and manage reporting and analytics capabilities that provide actionable visibility into underwriting performance and risk appetite adherence — enabling data-driven governance decisions that support Allianz Commercial's underwriting standards and business goals.
-
Support training and capability-building initiatives to embed governance standards and risk awareness across underwriting teams, reinforcing a strong 1st line of defense culture.
-
Collaborate closely with Line of Business (LoB) leaders within CUO to promote and realize 1st line of defense underwriting risk ownership, ensuring governance frameworks are practical and business-aligned.
-
Drive adoption of new governance frameworks in a matrixed environment, influencing stakeholders without direct authority.
-
Identify gaps in existing underwriting controls and proactively recommend risk-based enhancements that strengthen the control environment and advance Allianz Commercial's risk management objectives.
What You’ll Bring to the Role
-
Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Insurance Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or other analytical field.
-
3–5 years of experience in underwriting, underwriting governance, or a closely related risk/compliance function within P&C, Commercial or Specialty Lines, with exposure to large- and/or middle- corporate business segments preferred.
-
Demonstrated ability to develop or significantly contribute to risk-based underwriting guidelines, policy frameworks, or governance programs — with an emphasis on business enablement and supporting CUO objectives.
-
Strong analytical skills with experience in data reporting tools (e.g., Power BI); ability to synthesize complex data, draw meaningful conclusions, and translate findings into actionable governance recommendations and enhancements.
-
Proven track record of influencing cross-functional stakeholders and navigating complex organizational structures.
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills — able to translate technical underwriting concepts for diverse audiences.
-
Curiosity and initiative in exploring how AI tools can streamline or enhance underwriting governance frameworks; paired with the critical judgment to assess AI outputs rigorously, recognizing the low tolerance for hallucination or error in a risk governance context.
-
Self-starter who thrives with autonomy and can manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
-
Experience building or enhancing underwriting governance and control frameworks within a complex insurance organization, a plus.
-
Familiarity with regulatory requirements relevant to P&C Commercial and Specialty Lines, a plus.
-
Knowledge of Canadian and/or Latin American market dynamics and regulatory requirements, a plus.
-
Experience with delegated underwriting authority (DUA) programs and/or Excess & Surplus (E&S) lines, a plus.
-
Spanish language fluency, a plus.
- Experience in applying artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to improve business processes and decision-making is highly beneficial.
