Your Team
The Chief Technical Office is responsible for working with technical functions including Pricing, Product Management, Underwriting Integrity, Reinsurance, Portfolio and Accumulation Steering including Catastrophe Management, and Risk Consulting to ensure we are building Technical Excellence across our North America region, and in alignment with the overall global approach.
The Impact You Will Have
Reporting to the Chief Technical Officer, North America, the Regional Head of CAT Management – North America will play a key role in enabling and implementing the Allianz Commercial North America Cat and Capacity management strategy. It involves close alignment with the Global Accumulation & CAT team and North America LoBs, as well as various finance functions. You will ensure that LoBs in North America and Portfolio solutions (global) properly assess, analyze, report, monitor and utilize the available capacity as well communicate updates to the CTO and conduct related management reporting. You will not only measure performance through related KPIs, but also work actively to improve our overall strategy, tools and processes. You will work independently with very limited guidance on very complex areas and situations.
Some of your specific responsibilities could include:
- Leading the development and implementation of the North America NatCat Underwriting and Capacity management strategy, including regional risk appetite definition and capacity steering.
- Driving innovation related to modeling upgrades, tool enhancements, and evaluation of new modeling approaches for both modeled and non-modeled scenarios in alignment with global functions.
- Organizing and supervising model runs, reviews, and catastrophe loss modeling reports, including supporting regular and ad-hoc data extracts, account, facility analyses, reporting and CAT limit steering (regional limits), and providing input to ensure adequate Reinsurance protection.
- Working closely with global Accumulatio & CAT team, Risk Management, Reinsurance, Portfolio Solutions, Portfolio Steering, Pricing, Product Leaders, and Regional Underwriting specialists to ensure alignment and support business steering.
- Owning the North America data augmentation process, ensuring accurate enrichment of portfolios with granular industry and turnover coding, integrating data from multiple internal systems to support robust model performance, including setting up underwriting process for pre-bind assessment to reporting and monitoring in adherence to global standards (e.g., Data quality).
- Act as the key driver of progress for longtail accumulation management and be responsible for the CAT Underwriting processes for NA Underwriting and Portfolio Solutions (global) - from assessment, data capture, reporting and special analytics.
- Supporting collaboration across LoBs, cross-functional teams, and cross-geographical management under guidance from senior leadership and following standards set by the global teams, including assisting in building working relationships with business partners across North America functions and external stakeholders and ensuring regional adherence to global standards and processes.
- Supporting coordination with Actuarial and Risk Management (NA Risk Committees, Pricing tools), Reinsurance and ARC on catastrophe risk.
- Executing deliverables within defined scope and agreed timeframes with periodic guidance and oversight.
- Leading the implementation of new tools, aligned with the Allianz view of risk, to better enable capacity steering and support Underwriting.
- Defining and establishing interfaces to neighboring teams and creating efficient work processes, working closely with LoBs, Global pricing, and other functions to support business steering, portfolio management, and data quality improvements.
- Establishing and continuously improving the North America CAT analyses and services for AGCS' key clients.
- Recommending underwriting measures resulting from modeling analysis or model/parameter sensitivity tests.
- Accountability for NA management/leadership-level reporting.
- Supporting adherence to the Accumulation budget.
- Mentoring and elevating a team of North America CAT modelers providing both long tail and short tail support, including coaching CTO employees in global loss modeling activities and related analyses, using in-depth knowledge of model methodology to explain and validate modeled loss output.
- Activating and leveraging existing resources across the business to develop cross-collaboration and enable diverse groups to achieve sustainable outputs.
- Overseeing all project work, end-to-end, from ideation to implementation., translating high-level business goals into a clear executable technical strategy.
- Aligning architecture, tools, and team structure with business requirements and growth trajectory, Identifying and resolving systemic bottlenecks.
- Managing staff responsible for North American CAT underwriting-related tasks, processes and projects.
What You’ll Bring to the Role
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in insurance/reinsurance and Catastrophe Modeling Software. GIS (Geographical Information Systems) applications, including Arium;
- Strong background in cross-divisional and cross-departmental interactions, preferably additional experience beyond Underwriting (e.g., Actuarial, Finance, Reinsurance);
- Advanced-level knowledge of critical insurer financials, pricing, and reserving;
- Experience with strategy and/or business development in underwriting or a different functional area;
- Technical and practical background in probabilistic CAT loss modelling concepts, as well as Risk Analysis and Catastrophe Modeling Tools;
- Project management and change management skills;
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills with an ability to communicate with a variety of people across the organization;
- A deep knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), with the ability to leverage AI-driven insights to shape strategic decisions and drive innovation across the organization; and
- Degree in Mathematics / Actuarial / Finance / Engineering / Geosciences (graduate degree preferred).

The annualized base pay range for this role in Chicago is $180,000 - $210,000 . The annualized base pay range for this role in New York is $210,000 - $250,000 . The annual base salary range represents a nationwide market range. The actual salary for this position may be above and will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role, the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate. The base pay is just one component of the AzC total compensation package. As part of our comprehensive compensation and highly rated benefits programs, employees are also eligible for annual performance-based cash incentive awards.
